Programme Description

The PGDLIM programme has started in 2010. This is a two-semester Blended Learning Models based one-year course with 40 credits. Blended learning models combine face-to-face instruction with online learning to create hybrid educational experiences. It is being offered through a combination of contact classes and online learning through MOODLE e-learning platform. In 2024, in accordance with the guidelines outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the total credits were revised from 36 to 40. Selection of candidates is through a personal interview and the intake is 25 seats.

“We are preparing the manpower to be dynamic social change agents in managing, monitoring and disseminating the information by utilizing the ICT and related technologies. Training the manpower in capturing and preserving the tacit knowledge in the light of the emphasis on the importance of traditional knowledge. Restructuring and reviewing the LIS curriculum to cope with changing socio-economic, cultural and technological environment.”

 

Programme Objectives

To build and maintain the reservoir of memory to conserve and communicate culture, heritage, science, art and folk tradition of the nation.

 

To prepare students in the application of ICT for selection, organization and preservation of knowledge for use.

 

To bring out the competent human resource to promote access to the traditional and socially useful knowledge by the process of digitization.

 

To involve in capacity building activities to create a development oriented, people friendly learning support system.

On-Campus and Online Learning

Contact classes (lasting 15 and 12 days) are held twice at the TISS Mumbai campus, once in October/November and again in May/June. During these contact classes and training periods, hostel accommodation will be provided within the campus. For the remainder of the semester, teaching and learning will be carried out through planned weekly readings and regular assignments, primarily via web-based platforms such as Moodle.

 

Prerequisites

The course programme includes provisions for contact classes while students are on campus, discussions on Digital Library issues and involvement in fieldwork (Internship) – a practical project that enables them to create a Digital Library. However, it is expected that aspiring participants must have a basic understanding of computer operation, internet services, and elementary knowledge of IT applications. More than anything, this course involves a significant proportion of study time on the Moodle Online portal, participation in discussions and a group project.

 

Learning Outcomes

It is expected that this programme enables students to gain a thorough and technically focused background in Digital Libraries. Furthermore, it helps them understand the critical issues of Digital Libraries, facilitating them to serve as decision-makers and creators of Digital Libraries. Additionally, this course will help students gain advanced-level knowledge of digital asset management, information collection modelling, the design of human-centred digitally mediated information services; and information and knowledge management.

 

Learning Pedagogies

The courses are conducted through lectures, tutorials and laboratory sessions held in the Terminal Room (Computer Lab) by faculty members and academic staff drawn from Centre for Library and Information Management Studies (CLIMS), Computer Centre, School of Research Methodology, and other schools. Individuals from leading research institutions are invited to deliver lectures. Courses that require hands-on experience are held in the Computer Lab which is well-equipped with state-of-the-art systems with 21 computer systems and lecture halls with multimedia support, including access to broadband Internet.

 

MOODLE (Online Learning Mode)

Every semester will have a two-week contact program during which contact programs and exams are conducted at the TISS Campus. This program extensively uses MOODLE, an online learning management system, to complete online credits.

 

Field Work Research

Small-group discussions during tutorials allow students to explore subjects in depth, and practical sessions provide students with hands-on practical experience. Students investigate a concept in depth and apply the techniques they have learned in the classroom as part of course assignments. They are trained to create digital content in their chosen subjects of social sciences and other disciplines. Students come from diverse backgrounds and subject areas, contributing to an exciting learning environment.

 

Method of Assessment

Supervised placements in various libraries will be assessed through a continuous performance evaluation of students' fieldwork. A supervisor will review the student's project recordings, culminating in a final evaluation of a field work report using specific assessment tools. The overall teaching methodology includes lectures, brainstorming, practical sessions, and case studies. Assessment for these methods involves a mix of assignments, term papers, practical exams, and the evaluation of fieldwork or projects.
