Program Overview
The post graduate diploma in ‘Psychotherapy and counselling with children and adolescents’ offers a comprehensive perspective on children and young people’s mental health and well-being and approaches to working with children and adolescents. The program is suitable for counsellors/psychotherapists, guidance counsellors, psychologists, that work therapeutically with individuals under 18 years of age in a range of settings such as hospitals, schools, child development centres, community based organizations, NGOs, etc.
The program, is focused on building knowledge and the acquisition of key skills for working with young clients. It draws on established and current theory in counselling and psychotherapy, up to date approaches in child and adolescent mental health, lifespan development, family systems and trauma. The core elements of the program include both conceptual and applied courses. At the conceptual level, the program will review different theories of children and young people’s mental health, at the applied level it will include the application of psychological knowledge to difficulties experienced by children and young people and the critical appraisal of psychological knowledge and practice.
The program has been designed with professionals in mind, with contact and online classes to develop knowledge and skills, along with practice through supervised field work and case presentations, while continuing to meet individual life and work demands.
Basic knowledge and some theoretical perspectives about children’s development, factors affecting development, understanding about children and adolescents’ concerns and problems, knowledge about parenting and parenting concerns is expected.
Program Objectives
1. To develop a comprehensive perspective and sensitivity to comprehend the nature of child and adolescent development with an understanding of the socio-cultural contexts in which they are embedded.
2. To encourage a holistic understanding, theoretical and empirical grounding and sensitivity to develop the necessary attitudes and skills required to be working effectively with children and adolescents in mental health settings.
3. To be informed by a strong base in child and adolescent development, mental health, psychopathology, assessment, counselling and psychotherapy.
4. To understand and apply basic principles, strategies, and techniques of counselling and psychotherapy in an ethical, competent and sensitive manner with in working with children and adolescents and other stakeholders like parents and teachers, and across diverse settings.
5. To be able to plan and implement interventions based upon theoretically and empirically based treatment models in order to facilitate positive outcomes for children and adolescents across diverse settings and across different development levels.

Preparatory work. The program will involve preparatory readings that will orient and initiate the learners into the course curriculum. The learners will be expected to complete readings provided to them before they attend the lectures.
In-person contact classes and online lectures. During the program, learners will continue their engagement via lectures. The program will require learners to attend one week of contact classes in each semester, online lectures spread across the program duration, complete readings and assignments.
Field Work (FW). As part of the program, the learners will be expected to carry out field practice in the form of carrying out individual and group sessions with children and adolescent and also sessions with other stakeholders.
Supervision. During the program, one on one supervision will be offered by the faculty to review the sessions conducted by learners in their practicum.
Skill Lab. Skill lab will be focused on skill-building and will cover procedural knowledge and deliberate practice of skills drawn from theoretical concepts covered in the program.
Case Presentation. At the end of each semester, all learners will be expected to discuss their individual and group sessions in the form of a case presentation.
Theme paper. Spread across the second semester, students will write a theme paper on a theme or concern pertaining to child and adolescent mental health. Students will conduct a needs assessment at a community setting to get a deeper understanding of the issue/concern and go on to conceptualize and design a comprehensive intervention program to address the issue at hand.

Please note:
Selection of candidates will be as per the GOI Reservation Guidelines; important one being that if there are no OBC Candidates, only then will it be filled by General Category candidates.
The program will only be offered if there are a minimum of 5 students.
The program is a self-financed, professional program. There are no scholarships available. Students will be required to pay the semester fee.
No travel or other allowances will be offered for attending the contact classes. There will also be no provision for on-campus stay and students will have to make their own stay arrangements.
