About TISS

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) was established in 1936 as the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work. In 1944, it was renamed as the Tata Institute of Social Sciences. The year 1964 was an important landmark in the history of the Institute, when it was declared Deemed to be a University under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act (UGC), 1956. Since its inception, the Vision of the TISS has been to be an institution of excellence in higher education that continually responds to changing social realities through the development and application of knowledge, towards creating a people-centred, ecologically sustainable and just society that promotes and protects dignity, equality, social justice and human rights for all.

About the School of Health Systems Studies

The School of Health Systems Studies prepares students for a leadership role in public health and managerial roles in the fields of health and hospital administration. The school’s active social research programmes and national and international research collaborations in areas of health policy, strengthening health systems and public health contributes to the generation of new knowledge in this area. This ensures that its educational programmes are continuously updated to address current challenges and emergent trends. An important dimension of the schools’ educational and research activity is its contribution to developing the understanding of health and health care as a social science. The school is quite often called upon to respond to capacity building and knowledge management needs of the government health sector and this allows it to contribute to developing newer and innovative health care strategies, provide advocacy support for public health and build equity concerns into health policy and planning.

The School has four Centres:

Centre for Health and Social Sciences

Centre for Health Policy, Planning & Management

Centre for Hospital Management

Centre for Public Health

In 1989, the Institute established the Department of Health Systems Studies, with the assistance of Ford Foundation. In the year 1993, the department added a feather in its cap by starting the Masters in Health and Hospital Administration Programme. In the year 2006, when TISS restructured all the courses to make them more suited to meet the existing demands and challenges of healthcare sector, the Department of Health Systems Studies was renamed as ‘The School of Health Systems Studies’ (SHSS). In the year 2008, SHSS started the Master of Public Health with a focus on social epidemiology as its unique feature followed by introduction of Master of Public Health (MPH) in Health Policy, Economics and Finance in the year 2010. In addition to the masters’ programmes, SHSS also offers two postgraduate diploma programmes which largely addresses educational needs amongst in-service candidates and two doctoral (PhD) programmes for those who would pursue a career in academics and research.
