Description

Summary of the Program

The vision of the Masters in Social Work, specialization in counselling is to be a support and empowerment that envisions fostering a community where individuals are equipped with the necessary tools to navigate life's challenges. It is to create a space that promotes mental well-being, resilience, and inclusivity, ultimately contributing to the holistic development of individuals and the broader community. It emphasizes on forming psychosocial alliances in addressing social issues. Systemic considerations such as gender, class, caste, sexuality, culture are foregrounded in the programme. Intersectionality is afforded a special place to understand marginality in context of social justice. The students pursuing the course are encouraged to self-reflect and discover their career pathways as both an experiential and academic venture. It is envisaged that students of this course might make choices that include working with individuals, families, groups and communities in difficult settings across national and international NGOs, government agencies, becoming independent practitioners, or engage in research-based work

Program Objectives

In keeping with the above understanding, the Basic Objectives of the Programme will be

  1. To generate trained professionals with interdisciplinary knowledge base, appropriate attitude and essential skills of social work to intervene in the context of counselling and social work.
  2. To help students develop a comprehensive interdisciplinary knowledge, skills and attitude on a range of issues pertaining to development and who can act as catalysts to bring about positive change in society.
  3. To produce members of a trained work force using counselling-depth understanding of communities and their environment within a framework of social work values.
  4. Inculcate an ability to apply the principles and techniques of appropriate research designs and methodologies with a special emphasis on action research, data gathering, interpretation and qualitative methods.
  5. To create Social Work professionals who are in a position to respond to the northeast region and also take on the role of development workers elsewhere in the country and abroad.

Program Outcomes

It is envisaged that students of this course might make choices that include working with individuals, families, groups and communities in difficult settings across national and international NGOs, government agencies, becoming independent practitioners, or engage in research based work. It is essential that the course provides specialized understanding on the issues related to counselling and social work practice. Further, all social work practices will orient them to work as agents of change. The geo- political setting of the TISS Guwahati would make the program relevant to students of Social Work in India and the North East but would not be limited to them. The TISS Guwahati is designed to become a hub of social science education and research in South and South- East Asia. Students from the Hindu-Kush Himalayan region countries of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, Nepal and Pakistan would also find the course and field work settings most relevant
