Description

Introduction

The Centre for Public Health strives to protect and improve public health with the guiding principles of universality and equity. Drawing upon interdisciplinary scholarship, the centre is set to expand its horizon in teaching and learning programmes, innovative research and policy engagements both within Northeast India and at the national level in the years to come.

Recognizing the region’s vulnerability to ethnic conflict, economic underdevelopment, inadequate healthcare infrastructure and natural disasters, the public health Course is designed to build a cadre of professionals who are equipped with the skills and knowledge to address the context-specific health issues of the region. It aims to empower students to contribute to health system strengthening, policy-making, and research that is rooted in the region’s realities.

Along with the social work values and principles the graduates will be equipped to serve as public health professionals, researchers, educators who can develop and implement inclusive and culturally appropriate public health strategies in Northeast India and beyond.

 

Objectives

The programme has the following objectives:

  1. To understand the scope of social work practice in public health within a developmental and human rights perspective.
  2. To develop skills of working with individuals, groups and communities on public health issues.
  3. To develop skills in work at micro, meso and macro levels through strategic planning, governance, advocacy, activism, and research in a variety of institutional and non-institutional settings, and contexts including disaster and conflict
  4. To develop ability to work with other human sciences with an inter-disciplinary approach
  5. To develop sensitivity to various ethical issues and practices in public health and social work and engage actively in various regulatory bodies overseeing health ethics and human rights

Outcomes

The programme has the following outcomes: Students will be able to

A. Knowledge:

  • Develop a deep understanding of the evolution of Public health and crucial roles of health system to improve health of the population
  • Understand the determinants of health (including social, economic, environmental and political factors) and how it influences health.
  • Demonstrate the Ability to assess the health needs of the population
  • Identify major global health challenges

B. Skills:

  • Gain capacity to plan, design, implement, monitor and evaluate the health program effectiveness
  • Use both qualitative and quantitative research methods to determine the impact on public health issues.
  • Learn community engagement and collaboration
  • Develop Communication, advocacy and thought leadership Values

C. Attitudes:

  • Value and respect the culture
  • Commitment in promoting social justice by believing in equal access to health care service and reducing health disparities .
  • Respect of confidentiality, informed consent, and professional boundaries while engaging with diverse communities.

D. Career Readiness:

  • Career readiness to contribute to various agencies - governments, non governmental organizations, CSR, hospitals and other international development agencies.
