Description

Programme description

The master’s programme in development studies is designed to prepare a strong pool of development practitioners, analysts and researchers. It equips students with conceptual and empirical knowledge as well as tools to comprehend the complex global, regional, and local debates and challenges in development. It trains the students in historical and differentiated experiences in development with a multi-disciplinary perspective. Students learn about emerging developmental dilemmas, contemporary policy innovations, research methodologies and statistical software – all with a keen eye on constitutionality, social justice and sustainability.

In alignment with the New Education Policy, the master’s programme in Development Studies has been restructured. This new version, through its unique programme structure and pedagogy, allows students to enter and exit the programme in the one year and two-year formats. Sufficient credits have flexibly been allocated for interdisciplinary learning, skill acquisition, research methodology, blended learning, Indian knowledge systems and research projects. The new format also allows for experiences to be gained by the students from internship and fieldwork.

Objectives

  • To provide a comparative perspective on varying development experiences across the world.
  • To inform students of the multiple perspectives offered by various disciplines like economics, sociology, anthropology, political science and history, and the possibilities of synthesis of these perspectives to comprehend complex development issues;
  • To equip students with the most modern and cutting-edge research methodologies, tools and techniques to study and analyse society and issues in development;
  • To impart a grounded experience of the practice and challenges of development through intensive fieldwork and internships;
  • To ensure that students of development studies remain committed to the agendas of constitutionality, social justice and sustainability in their practice.

Programme Outcomes:

The master’s programme in Development Studies is designed to:

  • equip students with conceptual and empirical knowledge and tools to prepare them to face the complex global, regional, and local challenges in development.
  • prepare a cadre of development practitioners, equipped with theoretical and empirical knowledge, holistic learning modules on skill acquisition and research methodologies, blended learning, Indian Knowledge systems and research programmes that will enable them to meet new challenges in the field of development.
