Description

Introduction

The Master of Arts in Peace and Conflict Studies (PaCS) programme offered by the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Guwahati Campus, emphasises the need for articulating an alternative, historically and ethically grounded vision of politics and society amidst a series of conflicts and violence. It reflects the larger issues of justice and peace, as well as acknowledges the Campus’ unique location and expertise in being able to impart skill-based, philosophically grounded and employment-oriented degrees to prospective students. Its principal components spread across four semesters offer students a creative mix of theoretical grounding and empirical explorations, field-based experience, and an introduction to the world of policy making, donors and agencies working on peace building and conflict analysis.

The programme was developed in consultation with numerous organisations and individuals who were actively involved in the peace processes and reconciliation efforts. These initial linkages transformed the Centre into a pertinent node in understanding the conflicts in the region and beyond, as well as helping the institutions and civil society organisations in various peace efforts.

Objectives

The programme has the following objectives:

  • To develop critical skills in research, advocacy, and communication on issues of peace and conflict. The curriculum has components that critically appreciate traditional peace-building approaches and perspectives on reconciliation.
  • To document, understand and create new approaches to peacebuilding mechanisms in Northeast India and beyond.
  • To produce high-calibre practitioners, interventionists, writers, and researchers with practical, empirical and theoretical knowledge of violence and peace.

Outcomes

The programme has the following outcomes:

  • The programme becomes an essential node in training future peace workers. There is an increasing demand for human resources who are well-equipped to work with government agencies, civil society initiatives and international institutions in the Indian subcontinent and NER in particular.
  • A key outcome of the programme is to develop theoretically sound and empirically rich studies on peace-building processes, particularly from the northeast of India.
  • The programme goes beyond strategic/security studies and international relations approaches to peace and conflict studies. It produces high-calibre practitioners, interventionists, writers, and researchers with practical, empirical and theoretical knowledge of violence and peace.
  • The outcome of the programme is to expand opportunities to work in Governmental bodies such as the Human Rights Commission, intergovernmental bodies like the United Nations, international and national Human Rights Organisations, Research Institutes, Media and Peace Advocacy Groups.
  • The programme equips the students to engage with a wider range of field-based issues with peace practitioners, policy makers and agencies.
