Description

Introduction

The MA Program in Sociology and Social Anthropology at TISS Guwahati bridges the gap between Sociology and Social Anthropology by offering an integrated, interdisciplinary approach. It emphasizes theoretical grounding, research skills, and regional focus on Northeast India and Southeast Asia. Structured over four semesters, the first year covers foundational coursework, while the second centres on dissertation research, preparing students for careers or further studies.

Program Objectives

To provide students with the necessary knowledge and basic skills in understanding society and different theoretical orientations. For this purpose, the program aims to:

  • To Integrate the disciplines of sociology and social anthropology to have a comparative and systematic understanding of society and its institutions.
  • To Develop the student’s understanding and analytical abilities in major social anthropological perspectives.
  • To have the basic skills to understand how a simple and complex society functions and changes.
  • To ground students theoretically and methodologically, to enable them to understand national and regional specificities of contemporary societies in India in particular and its South/Southeast Asian neighbourhood in general.

Program Outcome

The programme has the following outcomes:

  • Understand Foundational Concepts: Gain knowledge of basic concepts, theories, and perspectives in both sociology and social anthropology.
  • Explore Social Institutions and Practices: Examine the structure and function of key social institutions (family, kinship, religion, economy, polity) from both sociological and anthropological lenses.
  • Apply Ethnographic and Sociological Methods: Develop skills in qualitative and ethnographic research methods for studying cultures, communities, and societies.
  • Critically Evaluate Contemporary Issues: Engage critically with current social issues (e.g., caste, gender, ethnicity, globalization) using interdisciplinary insights.
