Summary of the Programme:

The Master of Library and Information Science (MLISc) programme aims to create trained human resources to handle digital libraries, virtual libraries and digital resources. This programme’s main objective is to enhance knowledge and skills relevant to strengthening the country’s libraries, archives, documentation and information centres. The MLISc programme comprises 17 disciplinary core courses, 1 elective foundation, 1 open elective, 1 disciplinary elective, 1 internship programme, 1 capstone project, and a dissertation - totalling 80 credits spread over four semesters. The programme incorporates theories and practicals that include concepts from foundations to new and emerging digital library trends. This programme is designed for graduates, practitioners and professionals to train and strengthen their skills in documentation and preservation of print and electronic resources and digital information services. The programme provides highly personalised rigorous training on various areas like developing a digital library, electronic resource management, research data management, archive and preservation, digital humanities, content management, classification and ontology, cataloguing and metadata, scholarly communication, research tools, knowledge discovery and data analytics, applications of artificial intelligence (AI) in libraries, managing libraries using advanced technologies and many others.

The courses are conducted through lectures, tutorials and laboratory sessions. The MLISc programme provides a unique learning experience through practical based laboratory sessions and field-based internships. The courses that require hands-on experience are held at the Library and Computer Lab, which are well equipped with state-of-the-art systems with high-speed internet access. In the first year, students are placed on a month-long internship at a leading academic or research library to learn in real situations. The Internship helps them apply theoretical knowledge to practical situations under the supervision of a faculty and field supervisor and enhance their knowledge and understanding of the library and information systems. This programme has a strong orientation towards research, analysis and practice. In the second year, each student compulsorily takes up a capstone project and a master’s dissertation research and works under the guidance of a faculty supervisor. The research study enhances the knowledge and skills of students in critical thinking, problem-solving, technical writing, scholarly communication and publication. The Master’s research covers diverse areas, such as scientometrics, information storage and retrieval, digital library applications, artificial intelligence tools, text and data mining, content management systems, information and digital literacy, etc.

Programme Objectives

The main objectives of the Master of Library and Information Science (MLISc) programme are as follows:

• To equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively manage and utilize digital libraries, virtual libraries, and digital resources in various sectors (academic, research, corporate, public, etc.).
• To enhance students' knowledge and provide training on various emerging technologies such as library classification, web ontologies, artificial intelligence, data analytics, knowledge management, and web technologies in library and information science education and practice.
• To prepare students to work in libraries, archives, documentation centers and information centers for providing information and documentation services.
• To cultivate and promote a research-oriented environment and encourage students to conduct independent research in areas like scientometrics, information retrieval, digital library applications, data analytics and web technologies.
• To provide students with hands-on experience through laboratory sessions, field-based internships and a capstone project, enabling them to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world situations.
• To develop critical thinking, problem-solving and analytical skills among students, enabling them to effectively address the challenges and opportunities presented by the evolving information landscape.
