Bachelor Programme- Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences (BASS)

Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) started its liberal arts undergraduate program from its Guwahati, Hyderabad and Tuljapur campuses in 2012. The BASS programme focused on the humanistic aspects of Social Sciences with strong foundation in socio-cultural, economic, political, historical, environmental theories with the aim of instilling rigorous critical thought.

From 2022, TISS, Guwahati and Tuljapur Off campuses are offering 4 years undergraduate programmes in compliance with New Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Candidates may apply to these programme through Common University Entrance Test 2026 (CUET) portal of National Testing Agency (NTA). Click here to apply

Bachelor’s of Arts in Social Sciences (BASS).

This is a new 4 years UG programme and has the following key characteristics:

The new NEP compliant 4 years undergraduate programme has 162 credits and it ranges over a period of 4 years.

The programme offers UGC mandated common courses basket, social sciences basket, humanities basket, and vocational studies basket, interdisciplinary courses along with the option to purse major and minor in disciplinary and interdisciplinary area.

The NEP compliant 4 years undergraduate programme enables graduation with research degree after 4 years with one disciplinary major and two minors either in disciplinary or interdisciplinary courses.

At Guwahati Off campus, students will have following choices under disciplinary and interdisciplinary courses from the centre: Political Science (Major and Minor), Psychology (Major and Minor), Economics (Major and Minor), History (Minor), Public Policy (Minor) and Health Studies (Minor).

Possibility of different exit options is built in the programme. Students will earn the academic credits and these credits will be part of academic credit bank.

Research work leading to the submission of a dissertation extends over two semesters in the fourth year of the programme.

Increased options of interdisciplinary courses are offered as part of the programme.

The programme includes skill, value and ability enhancement course as part of the programme structure.

Bachelor of Science (BS) in Analytics and Sustainability Studies

With the advent of voluminous data sets on sustainability, there is significant scope for integrating Social Sciences and Science, Technology and Mathematical (STEM) disciplines to understand multiple dimensions of it. The proposed programme is an initiative in that direction. It envisages Analytics as a common thread that connects various fields to engage in an innovative learning process. In January 2018, the School launched a short-term learning programme for working professionals ‘Executive Post Graduate Diploma in Analytics (EPGDA)’. The first batch of EPGDA graduated in January 2019, and the second batch will be graduating by the end of 2021. Since its inception, the Labour Market Research Facility at the School has coordinated the programme. LMRF has launched its first batch of Postgraduate programme in Analytics (MA/MSc) in the academic year 2020. The program attracted students from all over the country, cutting across disciplines from engineering, management and social sciences. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, the first batch completed the course requirement for two semesters, including two internship opportunities, where students have worked in analytics teams. By August 2021, the second batch joined the program, and there is a significant increase in the size and diversity of the batch.

The BS program in Analytics and Sustainability Studies will be distinct from the learning programmes in analytics offered by other institutions since this program brings together the aspects of sustainability concerns and analytics to the same platform and addresses the same. The proposed program is structured as per the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020 with multiple exit options and trans disciplinary.

Rationale and feasibility of the programme

Tata Institute of Social Sciences envisages to evolve as a centre of excellence in analytics and sustainability studies that connects multi-dimensional aspects of real-world challenges dealing with issues interrelated to environment, development, science technology and justice. This course develops graduates with capability to understand the context of sustainability with an analytical and multi-disciplinary framework. The programme engages a multi-disciplinary pedagogy that generates outstanding analytical and research capabilities.

In pursuit of the vision, fostering sustainable futures through integrated research learning and collaborations with institutions, industry, state, and civil society, the course aims to creatively bridge analytics with dynamic sustainability challenges both at local and global contexts leading towards innovation for sustainable development and a just society.

Four Year Undergraduate Programme

Bachelor of Social Work (BSW)

The School of Rural Development, TISS Tuljapur, conceived the idea of offering an undergraduate programme in Social Work with Specialization in Rural Development (BSW-RD) in the year 2004. The program has continued for more than two decades, catering to diverse student communities. The institute has developed strong alumni of social workers and academics working in different parts of the country and abroad. The context of our bachelor’s programme in Social Work has anchored its core in engaging with the rural communities and various concerns of their everyday life world. Our curriculum has focused on the theory and practice of rural development with strong field work training component since its inception. As per the guidelines of NEP, the programmes has revised and introduced the Four year BSW program of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences in Tuljapur in 2022 as one of the first of its kind in the country. The present Four-Year Undergraduate Programme in Social Work of Tuljapur campus is having the major in Social Work (BSW) with double minors in (1) Rural Development and (2) Micro practices.

The significant features of the New Four-Year Undergraduate Programme in Social Work (BSW) are

The new NEP compliant four-year undergraduate program in Social Work (BSW) has 167 credits and ranges over four years.

The program offers UGC mandated standard baskets in Interdisciplinary subject courses, Ability Enhancement Courses, Skill Based Courses, Common Value Added Courses and Internship components.
The NEP compliant four-year undergraduate program enables graduation with a research degree after four years with one disciplinary major with double minor
BSW programme offers Major in Social Work and Minors in two subject areas of (1) Rural Development and (2) Micro Practices
The BSW program focuses on fieldwork training in various development organizations in government and non-governmental agencies, social research organisations including direct exposure to working with communities across the country. Fieldwork is an integral part of the programme and is a credited pedagogical activity.
Possibility of different exit options is built into the program. Students can earn academic credits, which will be part of the Academic Bank of Credits
Research work leading to submitting a dissertation extends over two semesters in the program’s fourth year.

Bachelor of Social Work

The Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) programme recognises that Social Work is a practice-based profession and an academic discipline that promotes social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people. Principles of social justice, human rights, collective responsibility, and respect for diversities are central to social work. Underpinned by theories of social work, social sciences, humanities, and interdisciplinary knowledge frames, social work engages people and structures to address life challenges and enhance well-being.

At the heart of the curriculum is the social work commitment to promoting social change, which involves identifying and addressing the root causes of social problems and issues, advocating for policies and practices that promote social justice and human rights, and empowering individuals and communities to take control of their lives and environments. Core elements of social work education include social work theory and practice, social justice and human rights, diversity and cultural competence, ethics and professional training, field education, self-reflection and self-care, and research and evaluation. The multidisciplinarity in the knowledge base comes from the curriculum being grounded in subjects such as psychology, sociology, anthropology, economics, political science, and law.

Programme Goal

To introduce students to people’s distinct contextual realities, infuse social work values of social justice, care, human dignity, collective responsibility, and respect for diversity, and deepen their knowledge and skills to address challenges for the well-being of communities.
